MOT and garage visit checklist

Preview guide for technician review. This is visit preparation, not a safety inspection or an MOT pass guarantee.

Before you set off

Check that the office has approved your appointment, including the date, arrival time and work requested.Check your MOT status and the official rules before driving. A request or receipt is not permission to drive.Agree any courtesy car or collection arrangements with the team; availability is not automatic.Remove valuables and unnecessary loose items so the team can access the vehicle.

Bring the useful details

Bring your locking wheel-nut key if your vehicle has one, and tell the team where it is.Bring service records or relevant recent invoices if you want the team to consider them.Have the vehicle key and any agreed access instructions ready.Note recent work, warning messages and any changes you have noticed.

Explain the concern

Write down what happens, when it began and whether it changes when starting, braking, turning or at different speeds.Copy an MOT advisory accurately, including its test date. An old advisory is not proof that a fault is still present.Mention any previous checks or repairs related to the same concern.Agree the best number to contact you on and ask how additional work will be authorised.
