Fault-finding guide

A warning light? Bring the useful details.

A dashboard warning tells you there is something to understand; it does not identify a replacement part on its own. Follow the vehicle handbook's instructions first. Then collect the details that will help the workshop discuss the concern and the right assessment.

Record the message accurately

When safely parked, note the symbol or exact wording, whether it stays on or flashes, and any other changes you notice. Do not take photographs or write notes while driving. The meaning and urgency depend on the actual vehicle and message; a generic colour chart cannot replace the manufacturer's instructions.

Describe when it appears

Say whether the warning appears at start-up, after a distance, in certain weather or after a particular event. Include loss of power, unusual sounds or starting trouble if present. Be specific about what you observed without attempting to recreate a fault in unsafe conditions.

Keep diagnostic codes in context

If you already have a code or report, include its exact wording, date and who obtained it. Mention any parts replaced or warnings cleared afterwards. A code can help the investigation, but it does not by itself establish which component should be bought or that clearing the message has repaired the cause.

Arrange the appropriate investigation

Turner Brothers’ diagnosis price is £99 including VAT. Ask the team to confirm the scope that fits your vehicle and whether further assessment might need separate approval. Explain if the vehicle cannot be driven normally so practical arrangements can be discussed before a visit.

Useful things
to know.

Can the website identify my warning light from a description?

It can help organise the enquiry, but it cannot diagnose the vehicle or decide whether it is safe to drive. Use your vehicle handbook and speak to the workshop about the exact concern.

Should I include a code from another garage?

Yes, with its date and any work done afterwards. It is useful context for an assessment rather than an automatic instruction to replace a part.
